How to Read Your Janam Kundli in 10 Minutes (Simple Guide)
A Janam Kundli looks like a box of numbers and abbreviations, but you only need five things to understand most of it: your Lagna, your Moon sign, your nakshatra, the houses and your current dasha. This guide walks through each in plain language.
Step 1: Make your chart (2 minutes)
You need your date of birth, the exact time of birth and the place of birth. The time matters most: the rising sign changes roughly every two hours, and the houses shift with it. If you are unsure of the time, use the best estimate from your birth certificate or family, and treat house-based readings with some caution.
Atma Darpan calculates the chart from a real astronomical ephemeris with the Lahiri ayanamsa, the standard used in Indian almanacs.
Step 2: Find your Lagna (Ascendant)
The Lagna is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. In a North Indian chart it is always the top diamond, marked house 1; in a South Indian chart the signs stay fixed and the Lagna box is marked separately.
The Lagna describes your body, temperament and the overall direction of your life. Many astrologers consider it the single most personal point in the chart, because it changes every couple of hours, while the Moon changes sign only every two and a half days.
Step 3: Moon sign (Rashi) and nakshatra
Your Rashi is the sign the Moon was in at birth. It is what newspaper horoscopes and daily Rashifal use, and it describes your emotional nature and how you react under stress.
Your nakshatra is the Moon's lunar mansion: one of 27 segments of 13ยฐ20โฒ each, further divided into four padas. The nakshatra decides where your Vimshottari dasha starts, and traditionally gives the first sound of a baby's name.
Step 4: The 12 houses in one line each
- 1st โ self, body, health
- 2nd โ money, family, speech
- 3rd โ courage, siblings, short travel
- 4th โ mother, home, vehicles, inner peace
- 5th โ children, education, creativity
- 6th โ work routine, debts, illness, competitors
- 7th โ marriage and partnerships
- 8th โ sudden events, longevity, hidden matters
- 9th โ luck, father, teachers, dharma
- 10th โ career and public standing
- 11th โ income, gains, friends
- 12th โ expenses, foreign lands, rest, spirituality
To read a house, look at three things: the sign on it, the planets sitting in it, and where its lord (the planet ruling that sign) has gone. A strong lord in a good house usually supports that area of life.
Step 5: Planets and their dignity
Each planet has natural meanings โ the Sun for authority and father, the Moon for mind and mother, Mars for energy, Mercury for intellect, Jupiter for wisdom and children, Venus for love and comfort, Saturn for discipline and delay, and the nodes Rahu and Ketu for obsession and detachment.
A planet works best in its exaltation or own sign and struggles in debilitation. A planet very close to the Sun is combust and gives weaker results; a retrograde planet acts in a more internal, repeated way.
Step 6: Your current Mahadasha
The dasha tells you when the promises in the chart become active. You are always running a Mahadasha (a long chapter of 6 to 20 years) with an Antardasha inside it. The planets ruling your current periods, and the houses they own and occupy, are the themes most active in your life right now. Our guide to Vimshottari dasha explains this step by step.
