Which Mahadasha Am I In? Vimshottari Dasha Explained with Examples
Your birth chart shows what your life holds; the dasha system shows when. Vimshottari dasha, the most widely used timing method in Vedic astrology, divides life into planetary chapters. Here is how it works and how to find yours.
The 120-year cycle
Vimshottari means "of 120". The full cycle lasts 120 years and passes through nine planetary periods, always in the same order:
- Ketu โ 7 years
- Venus โ 20 years
- Sun โ 6 years
- Moon โ 10 years
- Mars โ 7 years
- Rahu โ 18 years
- Jupiter โ 16 years
- Saturn โ 19 years
- Mercury โ 17 years
Where your dasha starts: the Moon's nakshatra
Each of the 27 nakshatras is ruled by one of these nine planets, in the same order starting from Ashwini (Ketu), Bharani (Venus), Krittika (Sun), Rohini (Moon) and so on, repeating three times around the zodiac. The ruler of your birth nakshatra is your first Mahadasha.
You do not get that whole period, though โ only the part that was left when you were born. If the Moon had already travelled half-way through the nakshatra, half of that dasha was "used up" before birth.
Example: the Moon is in Rohini (ruled by the Moon), 40% of the way through. The Moon dasha is 10 years, so 60% remains: you are born with 6 years of Moon Mahadasha, followed by 7 years of Mars, 18 of Rahu, 16 of Jupiter, and so on.
Antardasha and Pratyantardasha
Every Mahadasha is divided into nine Antardashas (sub-periods) in the same order, starting with the Mahadasha planet itself. Each sub-period's length is in proportion to its years:
Antardasha length = Mahadasha years ร Antardasha years รท 120
For example, Saturn's Antardasha within Jupiter's Mahadasha lasts 16 ร 19 รท 120 = 2.53 years, about 2 years 6 months. Antardashas are divided again into Pratyantardashas lasting weeks to months.
How to read your current period
- Which houses does the dasha planet rule? Those areas of life come forward.
- Where does it sit, and how strong is it? A well-placed, dignified planet usually gives a smoother chapter.
- How do the Mahadasha and Antardasha planets relate? Friends co-operate; a 6โ8 or 2โ12 relationship between them often brings friction.
- What are the slow planets doing now? Transits of Saturn and Jupiter over the dasha planet often time the events.
