Kundli Matching Explained: What 18, 24 and 30 Guna Really Mean
"How many gunas matched?" is the first question in most Indian marriage conversations. But a number out of 36 hides a lot. Here is what the score is made of, what the common thresholds mean, and the two doshas that matter more than the total.
What is Ashtakoota Guna Milan?
Ashtakoota ("eight parts") compares the two partners' Moon signs and nakshatras across eight factors. Each factor carries a fixed number of points, adding up to 36 gunas:
- Varna (1) โ spiritual and working temperament
- Vashya (2) โ natural attraction and influence over each other
- Tara (3) โ birth-star compatibility, health and fortune together
- Yoni (4) โ physical and intimate compatibility
- Graha Maitri (5) โ friendship between the Moon-sign lords: mental wavelength
- Gana (6) โ temperament: Deva, Manushya or Rakshasa
- Bhakoot (7) โ the distance between the Moon signs: family welfare, finances
- Nadi (8) โ constitution and health of children; the most heavily weighted
What do 18, 24 and 30 gunas mean?
- Below 18 โ traditionally not recommended by Ashtakoota alone.
- 18 to 24 โ acceptable. Most arranged marriages fall in this range.
- 25 to 31 โ a very good match.
- 32 to 36 โ an excellent match, which is rare.
Notice how the weights work: Nadi (8) and Bhakoot (7) together are 15 of the 36 points. Two couples can both score 26 โ one with full Nadi and Bhakoot, the other with zero in both โ and the second pairing is usually treated with far more caution.
Nadi dosha and Bhakoot dosha
Nadi dosha occurs when both partners share the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya or Antya), which gives 0 of 8 points. Bhakoot dosha occurs when the Moon signs sit in certain positions from each other (the 2โ12, 5โ9 and 6โ8 relationships). Classical texts also list cancellations โ for example when the Moon-sign lords are the same or friends โ so a dosha shown in the raw score is not always active.
That is why Atma Darpan shows the cancellations separately and, when Nadi or Bhakoot dosha is still active, says so even if the total looks acceptable.
Manglik dosha
A person is called Manglik when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, counted from the Lagna and, in many traditions, also from the Moon. Traditionally the concern is balanced when both partners are Manglik, and there are well-known cancellation rules. It is one factor among many, not a verdict on its own.
What the score cannot tell you
Guna Milan looks only at the Moon. A fuller compatibility reading also compares each chart's 7th house, Venus and Jupiter, the Navamsa (D9) chart and the timing of both partners' dashas. And no chart replaces honest conversation, shared values and family understanding.
